Stretching from Thessaly towards the sea in a hook-shaped fashion, Pelion is essentially a mountainous peninsula right in the middle of Greece. It has been a place of wonder and legend throughout time, as well as an important historical location, because of its geography. Its beauty, unique flora as well as its magnificent views, forests and streams, have helped label it as the ‘God’s summer residence’ in antiquity. Meaning this is where they would spend their holiday when they needed a break from mighty and rough Mount Olympus.
Pelion’s history goes as far back as most ancient Greek legends and myths; it was here where heroes of antiquity came to find the Centaurs, and train with them to become the fiercest warriors of their time. Jason and the Argonauts also set sail for their expedition from the ancient city of Iolkos (today’s Volos), the largest port of the area. This mountain has held a special place in the hearts of people that have been encountering it for millennia, and for all the right reasons.
Its unique positioning as a piece of land extended towards the sea, has made it a snow favourite during winters, and its vast network of creeks and underground streams have helped it develop an amazing variety of flora that can be found blossoming almost all-year round. Beeches, oaks, sycamores, wild poplars, chestnuts trees and pine trees are just some of its numerous inhabitants. Thanks to human agriculture, lower parts of the mountain are filled with apple and olive trees that can stretch as far as the seashore. The mountain offers amazing views and scenery all year long, footpaths for experienced or amateur hikers, excellent cuisine and both wonderful beaches and a ski centre at each top. Among Greeks, it is considered an all-season paradise.
